Last night I had the privelege at presenting at the Central Maryland Association of .NET Professionals (CMAP) in Columbia, MD. I was invited to speak on DotNetNuke, and it turns out that I was the presenter on the evening when they celebrated their 7th birthday.
CMAP is a wonderful user group. They are very active and have found lots of ways to support the developer community in Maryland. Their management team of Randy Hayes (no relation) and Chris Steen are well known and well respected in the DC Metro user group community. Unfortunately, both Chris and Randy were at the Microsoft MVP summit in Washington state. However, Ed Mullin, the president of BaltoMSDN, a developers user group in Baltimore, MD, deftly handled the mast of ceremonies role, while Randy Hayes' wife, Kryselin (??), assisted as hostess. I was warmly received by the group, and appreciate them inviting me to speak.
Here are my slides from the presentation.

If you missed Quentin Gilbert's presentation on Agile Development, it is hoped he will give it again during one of the upcoming Code Camps. I have known Quentin for over a dozen years, and he has always been a great developer who was consumed with building quality applications, but he has come into his own as a speaker and practioner in Agile Development.
The thing I like about Quentin's presentation is that he mixes theory and experience together. No project runs perfectly, and there is much to learn from mistakes as well as successes.
Antonio and I welcomed the opportunity to have Quentin speak since Agile project management can be used not only for software/application development but also to manage the implementation of a web 2.0 content-management system. Our user group aims to support discussions not only on development but also on managing of DotNetNuke (and other content management systems, like SharePoint).

I was doing a review of content management systems, and came across a surprising reference on Wikipedia.
What surprised me was the large number of free CMS products there are, and that most are written in PHP. The reference also goes on to group commercial products into low (<$5k), medium ($5-15k), and a high ($15>) categories. At the low commercial end, the split is between .NET solutions and PHP solutions.
At the high end, surprisingly to me, was the predominance of all the Java solutions. |
